I’m constantly being asked about yoga mats – so I’ve put together a small selection here.
I’ve tested all these mats extensively myself and am therefore happy to recommend them. For me, it’s not just about how they look, but above all how a mat feels during yoga.
What makes a good yoga mat?
For me, slip resistance is the most important thing. Particularly with dynamic yoga, a good mat, for me, is all about ensuring my hands and feet stay secure so I can concentrate fully on my practice.
The thickness of the mat also plays a role:
Generally speaking, the thinner the mat, the better the grip and the sense of connection to the floor – especially in standing poses. If needed, for example in winter, you can add a second mat on top for extra padding.
The thicker the mat, the more pleasant and comfortable it is when sitting or lying down. However, it becomes all the softer and less stable in standing poses.
If you also want to use your mat outdoors, I’d also make sure it’s easy to clean or wash. After all, every mat gets dirty at some point – and easy cleaning also helps ensure you’ll enjoy it for a long time to come.
And then there’s that personal gut feeling
You should like your yoga mat and find it so comfortable that you enjoy spending time on it.
Perhaps it’s a particular colour, a lovely design or simply a surface that feels right for you. This way, your mat becomes a familiar place – whether you’re practising yoga in the studio, at home or whilst travelling.
And if you’re on the move a lot, a lightweight travel mat might be a better choice than a heavy, thick mat.
Here are my personal favourites – all tested by me and given the thumbs up. I don’t get any commission 😉

These mats have a velvety surface that’s surprisingly non-slip; washable at 30 degrees, approx. €80, though there are often special offers 😉
